Rhinoplasty

If a nose is too large or wide, or if the nose tip needs reshaping, rhinoplasty or nose correction surgery is the appropriate cosmetic procedure. Rhinoplasty can also be performed for a functional need. The septum or the wall between the two nostrils must ideally divide the nose into two equal halves; a deviated septum is corrected through rhinoplasty to ease any breathing disability. Rhinoplasty is mainly of three types namely, primary rhinoplasty that includes the open and closed rhinoplasty techniques, secondary rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty that may be performed as an open or closed procedure, and filler rhinoplasty, usually used as a post-nose job correction . While primary rhinoplasty is the initial nose correction job, revision and filler rhinoplasty involves correcting minor problems that arise from the initial operation.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed by a qualified facial plastic surgeon. People choose to undergo a rhinoplasty or nose correction surgery for cosmetic or functional purposes. Rhinoplasty as a cosmetic procedure has gained popularity because any change in shape and structure of the nose is bound to highlight and enhance the facial features. Rhinoplasty or nose correction procedure is sought after by people for a number of other reasons. Rhinoplasty may be performed as a means to correct a birth defect in the nose, a breathing impairment or a disruption due to a facial injury. The trained surgeon with examine your nose externally and internally and give you an idea of what to expect from the surgery. There is no ideal or perfect rhinoplasty result as the procedure works to achieve an aesthetic improvement in the appearance of the facial feature, depending upon the possibility of correction and the surgeon's capability.

Rhinoplasty or nose surgery is a nose correction job that involves sculpting of the nasal structures, including the bones and cartilages of the nose. The process strives to reshape your nose through the surgical procedures including open or closed rhinoplasty, after the patient receives anesthesia. In closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions on the interior of the nose so as to make it appear invisible. The underlying cartilage is added or removed according to the reshaping required. Casts or splints may be applied and the incisions are then closed using dissolvable sutures. The entire surgical procedure takes about 1-2 hours, and the results are permanent. In open rhinoplasty that is used in major nose jobs, the surgeon makes incision in the columella, or the vertical strip of the skin separating the nostrils, so as to get a complete view of the nasal anatomy. Secondary or revision rhinoplasty is performed as a corrective measure of problems arising from the primary nose correction surgery. Filler rhinoplasty, also a post-surgery correction, makes use of injectable filler to fill depressions or even out bumps present after a nose job.

The healing process demands patience and cooperation on part of the patient. There may be some bleeding and swelling post-surgery. Keep your head elevated as per surgeon's suggestion and avoid any trauma to the nose; you may also use cold compressors to ease the discomfort. While most of the swelling subsides within a month, it might take a year for the actual results to show. Patients are therefore advised to wait before considering a revision rhinoplasty. Although the casts or splints may be removed one week after the surgery, post-surgical dressings and nasal packing are removed after about two weeks. The surgeon may also place soft nasal splints after the surgery.
